The Tornado... Mother Nature at her most violent

Michigan Insanity still scheduled for this afternoon!

The forecast details are still right on target from yesterday, with a significant severe weather day on tap for Michigan. The Storm Prediction Center has kept the Moderate Risk in their 06Z outlook today, with a 10% risk of Tornadoes in Michigan.

The current weather map shows a surface low centered over Southern Minnesota with the warm front to the west of Michigan. The morning MCS/crapvection that was forecast to be ongoing is currently crossing from Eastern Iowa into Western Illinois at 5am EDT. More crapvection stretches from Milwaukee west to about LaCrosse, WI. All of this activity is moving to the ENE and should be in Michigan mid morning and out of here by late morning/early afternoon.

Incredible tornado outbreak in the midwest!

Yesterday was an incredible day for tornadoes in the midwest and great lakes region! 5 were left dead including 3 in a tornado near Toledo. Major damage was reported in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan.

It also appears tornadoes went across Cass County Indiana and near Three Rivers, MI.

I was out chasing, with an initial target of Monmouth, IL. I wish I had stuck to the target, but I got suckered west to Iowa by the Mesoscale Discussion and the Tornado Watch from the SPC. I ended up too far west to make it back to the beast of a tornado which was dropped west of Peoria. It's possible that tornado was on the ground for almost 80 miles. It appears the towns of Dwight, Streator and Elmwood sustained direct hits by these tornadoes.

Incredible video from South Dakota!!

This is a short clip of the incredible footage I shot yesterday of the supercell in northern South Dakota. I will have a full chase account later, but this was one of the best chases of my chase career!!

Amazing Violent Multivortex Tornado Video from Monday!

As hyped, here is the amazing video I captured on Monday from the multivortex tornado south of Wakita, OK during the Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak! As you can see, we have a small funnel descend at the beginning and touch down briefly, then a new meso forms and drops a large multivortex tornado with a satellite tornado. We have to reposition as we were quite close (less than 1 mile).

I will be posting a full chase account for Monday along with one for last Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday as well this weekend. It appears the weather could get active again the second half of next week. My chase plans are somewhat a bit in the air since I am running a bit low on PTO at work, but we will see what I can work out.

Tornado in Northern Kansas!

Yesterday in Kansas we scored a brief spin up tornado near Hollenberg, KS. I was chasing with Adam Lucio, Danny Neal and Scott Bennett.

The video is featured this morning on The Weather Channel. I spoke live on air at 7:40 am Eastern Time about what I saw.

We ran into some hail (not sure what the size was, but I would guess 1" or less) as we were approaching the storm from the northeast towards the southwest. We ended up to the north of the lowering as it passed about a quarter mile to our south. Beautiful rotation and a brief actual touchdown.

After following that rotation for a distance, it fell apart and we dropped west to the next cell. We encountered some beautiful structure and an amazing shelf cloud before going live to air on the weather channel where viewers could hear hail pinging off my truck as the shelf cloud blew over.

Overall a great chase. I will be posting chase accounts when I get back to Michigan. Today we are chasing in Western Illinois, and might end up chasing in Arkansas on Saturday. I will be posting more on this blog and my Twitter.

Amazing Tornadoes in Oklahoma Yesterday

The pictures and videos that came in from the tornadoes yesterday in Western Oklahoma are nothing short of amazing. Congrats to everyone that scored.

The most amazing video came from Andy Gabrielson who got close to the tornado as it went through Hammon, OK. You can see structures being destroyed, and lots of debris flying through the air. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of this video in shows for years to come.

I went through GEMPAK, and pulled a model sounding for Hammon, OK at about the same time as the tornado yesterday:

RUC Sounding for Hammon, OK

There is absolutely no way I could have chased yesterday, even if I was in Oklahoma. I have been sick this past weekend and into today, and have been slowly trying to get better. I was way too sick to spend any amount of time in a car chasing tornadoes yesterday. I am still insanely jealous, and wish I could have been there, but overall any disappointment falls on the fact that I sat at home sick than anything else.

Tornadoes in East Texas

It appears the city of Longview, TX or just east had a tornado rip through this afternoon. What prompted me to blog about it, though, was the insane hook-echo on the Shreveport Radar at 2242 UTC as pictured below.

Hopefully everyone that was affected by this is alright!

Second Tornado on June 5, 2009?

I have been keeping this in the back of my mind since June 5th, and it's something I've pondered. With the June 5th episode of Storm Chasers airing tonight, I thought today was as good of a time as any to blog about this.
